Nassau County Police Mourn Death Of Longtime Detective

The Nassau County Police lost one of their own when Detective Erick Contreras died of cancer last week.

Contreras joined the Nassau County Police Department in 1994 with his last assignment being the District Attorney Squad and responded to the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11. 

He has been posthumously promoted to the rank of Detective First Grade and will be given a line-of-duty funeral in recognition of his service to the department and to the people of Nassau County, the department said.

"Contreras leaves behind a large extended family as well as his police family and will be missed," the department said.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23 with a viewing from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; a police service from 10:30 to 11 a.m., and a funeral mass from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Cathedral of Westbury, 212 Garden St.

Road closures: Prospect Avenue, Westbury in both directions from Grand Street to Rushmore Street from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
